Anyone who has wheat or gluten intolerances or suffers with coeliac will understand how hard it is to find somewhere to eat out that has a variety of options and is both safe and tasty. I have had coeliac for 11 years and I used to eat the same few foods over and over again when I went out, but the gluten free market has grown a lot over the years. Pubs and restaurants make a much bigger effort to provide a wider variety for people like me. Having grown up with coeliac, diabetes, lactose intolerance and heart problems in my family (and there's only 4 of us!) I'm used to eating very specific foods and knowing what to look for and ask about when I go out. I hope to share everything I know and all my 'gluten-free' findings to people who enjoy eating out and struggle with the diet, so they too can relax and have a nice evening out!

El Toro Contento, Spainish taps bar in Ventnor, Isle of Wight

In the picturesque town of Ventnor in the IOW, is the tapas bar; El Toro Contento which is run by Spaniards and serves everything gluten free, made with rice or corn flour, unless it absolutely necessary to use wheat flour. Rated excellent on trip adviser, this restaurant is the perfect place to visit for authentic Spanish food. They import a lot of their food from Spain and all the meat, milk, eggs and fish is locally sourced.

My family go to the Isle of Wight often for short breaks and holidays and my parents went to this restaurant recently, my mum being gluten, wheat and lactose intolerant really recommended it. They ordered Wild Boar stew with cumin, orange and rice and Lamb chillindron with dried pepper and tomato sauce, then they had a potato omelette, olives and an option on the specials board - roasted sweet potatoes with cheese and chorizo. For dessert they had Spanish sorbet and ice cream. The restaurant is quite small so they said it was advisable to book before you go.

If you are on a vegan or vegetarian diet, you can book in advance and let them know and they will make extra dishes suitable for you.
